 Institute Information

The Institute offers all types of endoscopic procedures:
-Diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy (including ligation of esophageal varices, glue injection into gastric varices, removal of polyps, argon plasma coagulation (APC) treatment of bleeding lesions, dilation of strictures, stenting)
- Diagnostic and therapeutic push enteroscopy
- Diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy (including removal of complicated polyps, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), APC treatment of bleeding lesions, dilation of strictures, stenting)
-diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound, EUS  (including FNA, FNB, endoscopic drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts, endoscopic celiac plexus block)
- endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Dr. Barkay completed her medical studies and Internal Medicine residency at Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine, and Gastroenterology fellowship at Ichilov hospital.  After returning from the ERCP fellowship at Indiana University Hospital, USA, she served as a senior gastroenterologist at Ichilov. Prior to her appointment at Ziv, Dr. Barkay held a position of Deputy Head of Department of Gastroenterology at Meir Hospital.
Cutting-edge endoscopic equipment has been purchased for the Institute of Invasive Gastroenterology, and EUS and ERCP examinations are now performed at Ziv Medical Center.
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERCP) is a sophisticated endoscopic procedure which allows minimally invasive treatment of pancreatobiliary diseases. The main indications for ERCP are endoscopic removal of bile duct stones, endoscopic treatment of chronic pancreatitis, palliation of pancreatobiliary malignancies and endoscopic treatment of benign bile duct strictures.
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) allows precise diagnosis of various diseases of gastrointestinal tract, such as bile duct stones, pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, submucosal tumors etc. EUS is the only procedure that allows biopsy of pancreas and other "extraluminal" organs in non operative setting. EUS in these days also serves as an effective therapeutic tool, allowing non -surgical drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts, and endoscopic celiac plexus block in pancreatic cancer patients suffering from intractable pain.
Dr. Barkay: "The invasive endoscopic service is of paramount importance for the population of the area. In particular, patients with complex pancreatobiliary problem can receive comprehensive diagnosis and treatment due to the combination of cutting edge imaging (CT, MRI), invasive endoscopy and pancreatobiliary surgery which have been rapidly evolving at Ziv".
