Excellence Prizes Awarded to Ziv Physicians

The Ministry of Health's "Director's Prize" was awarded to Prof. Alon Marmur for his great contribution to the establishment and development of the Cardiology Department at the Ziv Medical Center. In 1981, Prof. Marmur was appointed as director of Ziv's Intensive Care Unit. Eight years ago, he established the Cardiology Department.

In their rationale for awarding the prize, the committee members wrote "Prof. Marmur is an especially active researcher as well as an educator of a generation of expert physicians who received their training in his department. His deep empathy instills a sense of wellbeing and confidence in his patients and in his medical team. He demonstrates leadership and initiative in his management of the department and has an excellent rapport with his patients, based on his humane attitude". 

The title "Excellent Mid-level Director 2011" was awarded to Dr. Joseph Pikkel, Director of Ziv's Ophthalmology Department. This title is awarded annually for special achievements in government services, as an acknowledgement of respect and appreciation for quality work and striving towards excellence. 

Dr. Joseph Pikkel has over 22 years of experience as an Ophthalmologist, 9 of which have been as director of the Ophthalmology Department at the Ziv Medical Center. He served as a navigator in the Israeli air-force and in 1983 decided to give up a career in flying and began to study medicine in the Technion Medical Faculty. 

Dr. Pikkel specialized in Ophthalmology in the Rambam Hospital in Haifa and in 1997 specialized in retina operations in Sydney, Australia. Between 1997-2003 he served as a senior doctor in the Ophthalmology Department in the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera.
