Senator Cassidy visits Ziv

Prof. Eric Shinwell, Head of Ziv's Neonatal Intensive Care Department, met with the delegation and presented Ziv's humanitarian treatment of the Syrian casualties, victims of the civil war in Syria. The visit was especially meaningful as both Senator Cassidy and his wife Laura trained as medical doctors and expressed a keen interest in understanding the medical and emotional challenges faced by Ziv's staff who are treating patients with trauma and war injuries from neighboring Syria.

Senator Cassidy, a graduate of the Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical School, spent nearly three decades providing care for uninsured and underinsured patients in Louisiana’s charity hospital system.

He was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 2006 and in 2008, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives to represent Louisiana’s Sixth Congressional District.

Senator Cassidy was accompanied by his wife Dr. Laura Cassidy, a retired general surgeon specializing in breast cancer. She helped found a public charter school to teach children with dyslexia. Dr. Cassidy graduated from the University of Alabama Medical School. After choosing to be a General Surgeon, she learned that most programs had never had a woman in their General Surgery program and some as a matter of policy. She was the first woman in Louisiana to focus her surgical practice on breast cancer.

The delegation included a number of prominent guests including Mrs. Donna Sternberg, a member of the National Board of Directors of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) for 19 years and currently serving as the liaison to AIPAC’s International Affairs Department and Mr. Hans Sternberg , founding president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge, past President of Temple B'nai Israel, and a past member of Young Presidents' Organization. Mr. Richard Lipsey, a graduate of Louisiana State University, and Harvard Business School, currently Vice-Chair of the Louisiana Board of Regents and serves on several other charitable and civic boards. Mr. Lipsey has been president of Congregation B’nai Israel and president of the Greater Baton Rouge Jewish Federation. Mr. Susan Haspel Lipsey has been active in charitable activities in Baton Rouge. She was the first woman president of Congregation B’nai Israel and chair of many fundraising events for charitable and arts organizations.

The delegation was accompanied by Mrs. Devorah Patt, AIPAC-AIEF( R.A.) Acting Director in Israel
