Basal Joint Implant.

Dr. Haim Katsevman, a hand specialist in Ziv's Orthopedic Department, performed the first operation in Israel to replace the Basal Joint of the Thumb with an innovative implant.

Basal joint thumb arthritis is the result of the wearing away of cartilage in the bones of the thumb. While in the past this was common among the 60+ age group, today it is prevalent among younger people (45+), especially women. Patients reach levels of pain which disable them from performing the most rudimentary functions.

The operation performed by Dr. Katsevman on a 50 year old woman, required a small incision and removal of a small section of the joint bone, replacing it with the implant manufactured by the French company Groupe Lepine. Better surgical results are achieved as well as quick pain free function recovery.
