USA Embassy Delegation

On Wednesday, December 9th a delegation from the Embassy of the United States of America, headed by Mr. William Grant, Deputy Chief of Mission, visited Ziv Medical Center. Mr. Grant was accompanied by Mr. Marc Nordberg, Deputy Political Counselor; Lt. Col.  Richard Kiphuth, U.S. Assistant Army Attaché and Mr. Paul Brown, Regional Security Officer. The delegation met with Dr. Osama Hussein, Head of Internal Department A, who briefed the guests about Ziv Medical Center with a focus on Ziv's humanitarian treatment of Syrian casualties injured in the civil war ranging in Syria. To date Ziv Medical Center has treated 547 Syrian men, women and children, many of whom suffered from diseases for which they were unable to receive treatment in the war torn country.

The delegation met with Mr. Dudi Fuchs, Coordinator of Ziv's Trauma Center who expressed his deep concern that these casualties, many of whom spent weeks and even months receiving treatment at Ziv or other hospitals in northern Israel, are in great need of a rehabilitation center to see them through the lengthy rehabilitation stage. Mr. Fares Issa, Ziv hospital's dedicated Arabic speaking social worker in charge of the daily needs of the patients and Ms. Linda Futterman, Director of the hospital's International Relations, spoke about the generosity of the population in the region who have donated much needed items for the injured Syrians, including a large number of prostheses donated by a Muslim organization in northern Israel.

"While the hospital and Government of Israel are covering the cost of the hospitalization of the Syrian patients, we are need of financial assistance for VAC machines, external fixations, orthopedic braces, knee stabilizers and shoes, which need to be ordered as they are not part of the equipment available at the hospital, which is a general hospital and does not normally offer rehabilitative treatment".
The Embassy representatives visited a number of the Syrian casualties and spoke to them about their injuries and their attitude towards their Israeli care givers. The patients expressed their gratitude for the excellent treatment they are receiving and their longing to return home to their families in Syria.
Mr. Grant concluded the visit by commending Dr. Hussein and all of the Ziv Medical Center’s staff for the excellent care which they are giving to victims of the ongoing violence in Syria, as well as to the population of northern Israel.
