Glaucoma and Eye Surgery

The Glaucoma Clinic at the Ziv Medical Center is expanding its services and has recruited Dr. Olga Zurinam, whose expertise is glaucoma and eye surgery, for the Ophthalmology Department

Dr. Zurinam, 41, specialized in glaucoma at Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera.
For the past 10 years she has worked at Haemek Hospital in Afula, where she treated particularly complex cases which required eye surgery.

Glaucoma is the general name for several diseases that damage the optic nerve with the main etiological factor-elevated eye pressure.
The patient suffers no pain but in severe cases the nerve damage can lead to blindness.

"It is very important to detect glaucoma in its early stages, when medication alone can be effective" Dr. Zurinam said. "When the disease is diagnosed at a more advanced stage, surgical intervention may be necessary.
It is recommended that anyone over the age of 45 be tested at least once a year, particularly if he or she is high risk – i.e. suffers from diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or has a family member with glaucoma".

"The problem with glaucoma is that the patient does not feel pain in the eye and so sometimes is not even aware of it; it is termed 'the hidden thief of vision'," she said. "In many cases, it is diagnosed by chance or in later stages when patients complain about the narrowing of their field of vision".
