Department Information


The Department of Urology was established in 1973, and since then, the department's mission is to provide the residents of northern Israel with the best possible urology treatment. The Department offers quality treatment for a wide range of common problems in urology. The Department's physicians are active in the Health Fund Community Clinics and maintain efficient contact with the patients and family doctors.

The Department physicians have experience in rehabilitation of urinary tract wounds and are involved in the dedicated treatment provided to IDF soldiers as well as to foreign citizens brought to the hospital as a humanitarian gesture.

The Department treats patients suffering from malignant tumors of the urinary tract, benign enlargements of the prostate, stones in the urinary tract, female and pediatric urology, sexual dysfunctions and neuro-urology.

As of 2014, innovative surgery in a range of leading fields have been introduced in the Urology Department:
1. Laparoscopic Surgery. Minimally invasive surgery for tumors of the kidney adrenals. Ureters and bladder.
2. Advanced oncological surgery of bladder and prostate cancer, kidney and testicle tumors.
3. Innovative surgery for treating incontinence among men and women. Installing artificial urinary sphincter and male sling operations.
4. Injecting Botox to improve continence among women suffering from an overactive bladder.
5. Reconstructive and correction of male sexual organs.
6. Advanced laparoscopic treatment of female prolapse of the pelvic organs, in cooperation with the Department of Gynecology.
7. Laparoscopic surgery in pediatric urology in cooperation with the Unit for Pediatric Surgery, treating congenital anomalies in the urinary system and undescended testis

Clinic

The Department's Day Clinics offer the following clinics:

General Urology Clinic , offering treatment for a wide range of common Urological problems and triage of referred cases.

A Kidney Stone Clinic which deals with all aspects of treatment and prevention of stones in the Urinary Tract.

A Uro-Oncology Clinic which treats malignant tumors of the kidneys' adrenals, prostate, bladder and testicles. The clinic cooperates closely with Ziv's Oncology Clinic.

A Uro-dynamic clinic which diagnoses and treats disorders relating to incontinence and malfunctioning of the Lower Urinary Tract.

A clinic for treating male erectile dysfunction treating urinary tract infections, incontinence, treatment of sex organ and urinary tract defects.

Academic and Research Activities

As of 2012 the Urology Department is affiliated to the Bar-Ilan University's Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee. The Department regularly receives medical students for bedside clinical teaching and frontal lectures. The Department also teaches nursing students from the School of Nursing at the Ziv Medical Center.

Research in the Urology Department is conducted in cooperation with other such departments throughout the country and with the Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee. The main subjects of research in the Department are:
1. Physiology of the smooth muscle (bladder, prostate, corpora cavernosa)
2. Hypogonadism - laboratory and physiological models.
3. Laparoscopic training and models of minimally invasive surgery.
4. Current protocols for treating malignant tumors of the urinary tract.
5. Early symptoms of prostate cancer
6. Non-invasive diagnosis of bladder cancer
7. Genetic link in kidney cancer
