669 Adopts the Breinan Juvenile Diabetes Research Center

A fun filled day was held for the children of the Breinan Juvenile Diabetes Research Center at the Ziv Medical Center by the Israeli Air Force Rescue Unit 669. The soldiers of the Unit invited the children for a sports day on the banks of the Jordan River at Kibbutz Sde Nehemia. The children enjoyed the various sports activities, ball games, relay races and obstacle courses built by the soldiers. Surprises and gifts were also distributed to the children.

A significant part of the day’s events was a meeting between the volunteer soldiers and the children. During the encounter, the soldiers explained how to volunteer, how to join the army in general and in particular the 669 Unit, despite having diabetes. The Unit commanders said that the volunteers with diabetes are of particularly high quality and contribute greatly because they join the Unit by choice, are highly motivated and have a strong desire to contribute to the army and the country.

At the end of the special day, Dr. Orna Dali-Guttfried, Director of Ziv's Breinan Juvenile Diabetes Research Center, acknowledged the commanders and fighters saying “The entire staff and I of course, thank the 669 Unit from the bottom of our hearts for putting together the children’s sports activities and instilling in them confidence and a different perspective in facing their future challenges. Dealing with diabetes is not a simple challenge, especially in children, and can lead to many physical and emotional difficulties. Participation in sports events with the elite IDF Unit contributes to the children's self confidence and raises their awareness to their capabilities and skills, which is an important part of dealing with diabetes”. Dr. Dali-Guttfried also thanked the Association for Childhood Diabetes whose significant contribution was valuable in organizing this day and the James Richardson Company for providing the gifts for the children.
