The new IOL Master 700,a state-of-the-art instrument used in cataract surgery, one of the first of its kind in Israel, was recently purchased for Ziv Medical Center's Ophthalmology Department .
The advanced technology can calculate the strength of the replacement lens required by measuring various parameters of the patient's eye such as the corneal force and the length of the eyeball.

Dr. Balal Shehadeh, an ophthalmologist at the Cataract Clinic at Ziv Medical Center, says the new device is much more accurate than the previous generation, and that this is especially important when treating patients with advanced cataracts. "In the older population, cataracts are more severe. The more advanced the cataract, the more sophisticated and sensitive is the pre-surgery data required. Using statistical formulas, the new instrument performs complex and precise calculations which determine which lens is the most appropriate for the patient".

Cataract, causing blurring of vision, is a common condition among the elderly, but may also occur in younger people as a result of disease, (e.g. diabetes) or trauma to the eye due to an injury.
The ability to see the world sharply is critical to one’s quality of life; early detection can save the eye from blindness.
It is important to be attentive to early symptoms of cataracts and refer to an ophthalmologist. Cataract surgery removes the murky natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens.
